Note: Board feet calculations use the rough (nominal) size. If you enter a finished size (e.g., 1.5" for a 2x4), the volume will reflect the finished volume.

Understanding Lumber Measurements

Lumber is sold in different ways depending on the project. Understanding the difference between Board Feet and Linear Feet is essential for accurate budgeting.

Board Feet (BF)

A Board Foot is a volume measurement. It represents a piece of wood that is 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 1 foot long (or 144 cubic inches). It is the standard unit for buying hardwoods and rough-sawn lumber.

Formula: (Thickness × Width × Length) / 12

Linear Feet (LF)

A Linear Foot is simply a length measurement. It is typically used for trim, molding, and dimensional lumber (like framing studs) where the thickness and width are standard.

Formula: Length × Quantity

Nominal vs. Actual Size

Keep in mind that a "2x4" is actually 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches after planing and drying. For estimating structural projects, use the nominal size. For precise volume calculations, use the actual size.
